Slack stores uploaded files in the workspace
A demo dragged into a channel becomes a workspace file. The single-file limit is often around 1 GB. The file remains as long as the channel archive does. Client deliveries should not pile up this way.
The download link’s expiration is set from the start.
| Method | 2.4 GB sprint delivery |
|---|---|
| Slack file | Often stops at 1 GB |
| Permanent channel file | May remain until deleted |
| Guest invitation | Account and permissions |
| Slack bot | None |
| Link posted in the channel | Set expiration |
The example above includes a demo, design package, specification, cover image, and note. 2.4 GB is too large for a Slack file. It is not too large for free SendGB transfers. No registration is required.
Share files outside a Slack workspace
Inviting a client to the workspace may also give them access to the channel history. A link gives access only to this transfer. No Slack account is required.
| Workspace | Download link | |
|---|---|---|
| Who has access | Invitees | Anyone with the link |
| What they see | Channel files | This transfer |
| 1 GB limit | May block the upload | 2.4 GB fits |
| Availability | Until you delete it | 7 days |
For Teams, see sending files with Microsoft Teams. For folder structure, see sending folders.
Keep the password separate in public channels
If you post the link in a public channel, anyone who can see it can download. Do not include the password in the same message. Fewer people can see a private channel. Send the password separately from the link.
| Location | Result |
|---|---|
| Public channel | Everyone can see the link |
| Private channel | Fewer viewers, but the message remains |
| Password in the same message | The protection is undone |
| Guest invitation | Not required |
| Bot | None |
2.4 GB is too large for a Slack file
This size is within the 5 GB limit. It is free to send. It stays available for 7 days. Free transfers up to 250 MB stay available for up to 90 days. Slack’s 1 GB file size limit does not affect SendGB’s limits. Archives over 5 GB require a paid plan.
| Total | Slack file | SendGB |
|---|---|---|
| Short note | Can stay in the channel | Not needed |
| 2.4 GB example | May be blocked | Free, 7 days |
| Permanent client archive | Builds up in the workspace | Up to 1 year with SendGB Extra |
| Over 5 GB | Cannot be sent | SendGB Extra or SendGB Exceed |
| App | None | None |
Do not upload the file to Slack. Send the link.
How to send
- 1
Add your files
Do not upload a demo over 1 GB as a Slack file. You can send 2.4 GB with SendGB without registering. The free limit is 5 GB.
- 2
Paste the link in the channel
Paste the link in the relevant channel. Do not drag in the file. Do not post the password in a public channel.
- 3
The recipient downloads
No Slack workspace invitation is required. A browser is enough. SendGB Exceed transfers stay available for 7 days. SendGB Extra keeps files for up to 1 year.
What happens to your file?
- The demo and design files are not uploaded to Slack.
- Files are not recompressed.
- Only the link stays in the channel.
- If you provided your email address, you receive one notification when downloading starts.
What we don’t do
- There is no SendGB app or bot for Slack.
- We do not raise Slack’s 1 GB file size limit.
- Everyone in the channel can see the link. Send the password separately from the link.
- A download notification does not mean everyone watched the demo.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Slack file size limit?
The single-file limit is often around 1 GB. The limit may vary depending on Slack and your plan. That means a 1.4 GB demo may not upload as a file. Sharing a link avoids this limit.
Does the file stay in the channel?
A file dragged into Slack stays in the workspace. The link may remain as long as the channel exists. For this 2.4 GB transfer, the download link stays available for 7 days with free transfers and SendGB Exceed, and for up to 1 year with SendGB Extra.
Is there a SendGB app for Slack?
No. There is no bot that automatically posts files to the channel. You paste the link yourself.
Does an outside client need to join the workspace?
No. No invitation, guest account, or permission is required. A browser is enough. The recipient downloads from the link and does not create a SendGB account.
Is sending 2.4 GB free?
Yes. 2.4 GB is below the free 5 GB limit. No registration is required. Slack’s single-file limit is separate and is often around 1 GB. That limit prevents the file from being uploaded to Slack. Sharing a link avoids it.
Should I post the password in a public channel?
Do not post the password in a public channel. Anyone who sees the link can download. Send the password separately from the link. Share it privately.
Is the folder structure preserved?
Folder names are preserved when the entire transfer is downloaded. Files uploaded individually to Slack do not retain this structure. We do not extract the ZIP. The PDF can be opened.
How does this differ from Teams?
Both store files in their own workspace. Teams often uses OneDrive or SharePoint. Slack uses its own storage. For both, a link is simpler for an outside recipient. There is no SendGB app for either.
Will I get a download notification?
Yes, if you provided your email address. With email delivery, you are notified once per recipient. With link delivery, you are notified once per transfer. This notification does not confirm that everyone in the channel watched the demo. Slack does not show this information in its own notifications.
Should I share files under 1 GB with a link too?
Yes, if you do not want the file stored permanently in the workspace. A short note can stay in Slack. Share demos, designs, and client deliveries with a link.
Send a download link instead of uploading the file to Slack
A 2.4 GB sprint delivery exceeds Slack’s file size limit. The download link has a set expiration.
