What is Object Storage?
Object Storage is a way of structuring stored data so that it can be characterized as objects that can be manipulated in different ways by hardware and network storage systems. One of the important differences between file and object systems is that in object storage systems, objects are not in a file folder hierarchy. Some define objects as a set of buckets that can be transmitted through multiple storage nodes or regions. In this positional system, metadata is stored with the object. You can think of each object as a single block or pile of data that isn't stored in a tree design as in more traditional file-folder systems, but instead has a label showing what's in it.

Like traditional files, objects can have special indicators attached to them to help a system understand what they contain. Often called metadata, this information allows the system to handle each data object more capably. Giving systems this kind of versatility can help network administrators:
Object Storage models are also useful for new data processing procedures attached to fault-tolerant and redundant systems. For example, most systems use a RAID system to write a portion of files to various drives or storage locations. New technologies allow a physical drive to be divided into many storage areas. When object storage models are compatible, this can allow the use of much larger collections of data that can be easily backed up, evaluated, and recalled on demand. Object storage is also very useful in new distributed file systems supporting massive data centers built by government agencies and large private enterprises worldwide.
